Extend feeder vitality, support rapid healthy growth, and prevent colony starvation with our Specialized Hornworm & Silkworm Powdered Gel Diet. Refined across dozens of formulation trials and standardized as a reliable rearing diet, this nutrient-dense powdered feed mixes into a firm, moisture-rich gel that delivers complete hydration and bioavailable nutrition for captive-reared hornworms (Manduca sexta) and silkworms (Bombyx mori). Formulated without the hazardous nightshade toxins found in wild garden foliage, this clean diet keeps your worms thriving for longer, allowing you to sustain your feeder colony until they reach the exact target size for your reptiles and amphibians.
Nutritional & Feeder Husbandry Benefits
- Standardized Commercial Growth Formula: Developed to eliminate nutritional deficiencies and digestive failures, providing balanced proteins, carbohydrates, and micronutrients that fuel steady, uniform larval growth.
- Dual-Feeder Compatibility (Hornworms & Silkworms): Tailored to meet the strict dietary requirements of both hornworms (Manduca sexta) and mulberry-dependent silkworms (Bombyx mori), providing a versatile staple diet for two of herpetoculture’s best soft-bodied feeders.
- 100% Solanine-Free & Safe: Captive hornworms require artificial diets free of solanine and secondary plant alkaloids found in wild nightshades (tomato and pepper foliage). This clean formula ensures every feeder offered to your insectivores is chemically safe, non-toxic, and nutritious.
- Integrated Hydration Vehicle: Sets into a dense, water-bound gel that provides all necessary hydration directly through feeding, eliminating the need to mist feeder containers (which quickly leads to lethal mold and bacterial blooms).
- Extended Colony Longevity: Eliminates starvation when hornworms outgrow the small food plug supplied in commercial transit cups, allowing keepers to hold, size up, and maintain colonies over several weeks.
Preparation & Cooking Guidelines (1/4 lb Batch)
- Initial Slurry Mix: In a microwave-safe container, combine one 1/4 lb packet of dry powdered food with 1 1/2 cups of hot water. Blend thoroughly using an electric hand mixer until the powder is completely dissolved and lump-free.
- First Microwave Cycle: Cover the container securely with plastic wrap or a fitted lid. Microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes (cooks most evenly with an active turntable in a 1200W microwave).
- Intermediate Blend: Carefully remove from the microwave—use extreme caution, as the mixture will be hot and release steam upon opening. Blend thoroughly with the electric hand mixer. Re-cover the container and microwave on HIGH for an additional 2 minutes (extend to 3 minutes if using an older or lower-wattage microwave).
- Final Whip & Cooling: Remove with caution, uncover, and give a final thorough mix with the electric hand mixer. Immediately cover and place into the refrigerator to cool; keeping the container covered is essential to prevent moisture loss and surface skinning.
- Setting & Serving Texture: Once fully chilled, the food will firm into a dense, soft cheese-like consistency. It can then be sliced into solid feeding blocks or grated with a clean kitchen grater for feeding out.
Feeding & Colony Maintenance Guidelines
- Dispensing & Placement: Press firm slices into the top of inverted habitat cups or grate the chilled gel across clean plastic mesh screens. Offer only what the larvae can consume within 24 to 48 hours to maintain fresh feeding surfaces.
- Frass Separation: Keep hornworms housed in elevated or inverted setups so fecal pellets (frass) drop down away from the fresh food blocks, preventing fouling and bacterial transfer.
- Storage & Shelf Life: Store prepared, cooled gel tightly sealed in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 weeks. Keep unmixed dry powder sealed in a cool, dark, dry pantry for extended shelf stability.
- Target Inhabitants: Soft-bodied hornworms and silkworms raised on this diet provide essential calcium, protein, and hydration for bearded dragons, chameleons, leopard geckos, crested geckos, monitor lizards, tree frogs, and pacman frogs.
Feeder Safety & Husbandry Tip: Never supplement captive hornworms with wild tomato, eggplant, or pepper foliage from the garden. Wild nightshades contain toxic solanine that hornworms naturally absorb and store within their tissues, rendering them toxic to reptiles. Rehydrated commercial diet guarantees safe, chemically clean feeders every time.
