A heavy-bodied, meatier alternative to Dubia roaches with vibrant coloration, natural hunting motion, and poor climbing ability.

When looking to expand your pet's dietary rotation, standard feeders can feel repetitive. The Orange Head Roach (Eublaberus posticus) is one of the most underrated feeder insects and bioactive display pets in the hobby. Heavy-bodied and substantial across every life stage, Orange Heads provide a dense meat-to-shell ratio that satisfies large appetites and fuels the metabolism of active reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids.

While they are remarkably fast ground runners, Orange Heads are among the least escape-prone species you can keep. Unlike invasive or pest roaches, they are very poor climbers on smooth glass or plastic. When startled, their instinct is to burrow downward into deep substrate rather than climb enclosure walls or screen lids.

Orange Heads are also visually striking: young nymphs sport a glossy, jewel-toned red coloration before maturing into full-winged adults with their signature bright orange pronotums. Unlike traditional feeders that carry unpleasant, musky odors, Orange Heads have a clean, faint, and distinctly citrus-like scent. Whether maintained as a high-yield feeder colony, an engaging classroom vivarium, or an active display pet, Orange Heads offer an interactive and clean keeping experience.

Key Features

  • Substantial, Heavy-Bodied Prey: Thicker and meatier than standard feeders, offering an excellent source of digestible protein, healthy fats, and hydration for hungry insectivores.
  • Non-Climbing & Low Escape Risk: Lacks effective climbing pads on smooth surfaces, making them easy to contain in glass terrariums or plastic keeper bins without escaping up the walls.
  • Burrowing Defense Mechanism: Naturally burrows straight into loose soil or leaf litter when disturbed rather than scurrying upward toward lids.
  • High Prey-Drive Stimulant: Fast ground movement immediately triggers the natural chasing and hunting responses of sight-oriented predators like monitors, bearded dragons, and chameleons.
  • Clean, Citrus Aroma: Produces a faint, naturally fresh citrus scent rather than the harsh ammonia or stale smell typical of neglected cricket bins.
  • Vibrant Life Stages: Young nymphs display a bright, glossy red exterior, while mature adults develop fully formed wings and a distinctive bright orange crown.

Recommended For

  • Lizards & Monitors: Bearded dragons, Ackie monitors, savannah monitors, blue-tongue skinks, tegus, and large geckos.
  • Amphibians: Pacman frogs, Pixie frogs, White’s tree frogs, and large toad species.
  • Invertebrates: Adult tarantulas, scorpions, and large centipedes.
  • Classrooms & Hobbyists: Engaging, low-maintenance display colonies for teaching insect life cycles and natural decomposition.

Basic Colony & Feeder Care Guide

  1. Substrate Requirements: Unlike Dubia roaches (which can be kept bare-bottom with egg cartons), Orange Heads require a 2- to 3-inch layer of moist, loose substrate such as coconut coir, peat moss, or bioactive soil with leaf litter to support their natural burrowing habits.
  2. Containment: Keep in a smooth-sided glass terrarium or plastic tub with secure top ventilation.
  3. Diet & Nutrition: Orange Heads are enthusiastic, omnivorous eaters. Provide a high-protein dry roach chow, fish flakes, and fresh vegetable slices (such as carrots, sweet potato, and squash) to keep colonies fully nourished.
  4. Temperature & Moisture: Maintain temperatures between 78°F and 88°F with moderate humidity. Lightly mist a corner of their substrate to provide continuous access to moisture.

Feeder Specifications

Feature Detail
Scientific Name Eublaberus posticus
Common Name Orange Head Roach
Adult Size 1.5 – 1.75 inches
Climbing Ability Poor (incapable of scaling smooth glass, plastic, or acrylic)
Dietary Profile High-protein omnivorous diet and fresh vegetables
Primary Uses Staple feeder alternative, breeding colony, classroom vivarium, display pet

Husbandry Tip: Orange Heads have a noticeably higher protein requirement than many other roach species. Always keep a protein-dense dry food (like our high-calcium chow) available in their dish—this prevents adults from nibbling on each other's wings in high-density colonies.
