The Science-Backed Secret to Long-Lasting Bioactive Health
Give your bioactive vivarium the solid foundation it deserves. Because our scaled and many-legged companions are family, their enclosures need more than just dirt—they need a thriving, well-aerated ecosystem.
Our natural, porous Horticultural Pumice is a must-have substrate amendment engineered by nature to solve the biggest challenges in terrarium care: compaction, anaerobic bacteria, and root rot.
Why Pumice Belongs in Your Bioactive Build:
- Superior Aeration & Anti-Compaction: Fine substrates naturally pack down over time, suffocating plant roots and microfauna. Pumice creates lasting structural pathways in your soil, ensuring continuous airflow down to the drainage layer.
- Balanced Moisture Retention: Pumice is filled with millions of microscopic pores that hold onto moisture and beneficial minerals, slowly releasing them without leaving the soil waterlogged or soggy.
- Habitat for Beneficial Microbes: The vast surface area of porous volcanic rock provides prime real estate for beneficial nitrifying bacteria, mycorrhizae, and cleanup crews (isopods and springtails) to colonize and thrive.
- Non-Degrading & 100% Inert: Unlike bark, moss, or perlite—which can break down, float to the surface, or turn into sludge over time—pumice will never decompose, ensuring your vivarium’s soil structure lasts for years.
- Reptile & Amphibian Safe: Chemically neutral, non-toxic, and free of added fertilizers or synthetic chemicals, making it completely safe for burrowing species, delicate amphibians, and micro-fauna.
How to Use:
- Soil Mixes (Custom Blends): Mix 15% to 30% pumice into your primary substrate (such as coco coir, peat moss, or organic topsoil) to dramatically improve drainage and root aeration.
- Arid / Desert Setups: Blend up to 40–50% with sand and clay for arid bioactive setups (e.g., Leopard Geckos or Bearded Dragons) to promote rapid drainage and mimic natural arid soil horizons.
- Drainage Layer Supplement: Can be used as a lightweight, clean drainage layer or blended with clay balls to prevent stagnant water zones.
Keeper’s Tip: Always rinse pumice lightly before use to remove any fine natural dust. Combine with a rich organic base and your favorite cleanup crew for an enclosure that practically takes care of itself!
