Introduce graceful, cascading greenery and intricate micro-pathways to your naturalistic enclosure with String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii). Featuring slender, purplish thread-like vines adorned with small, fleshy heart-shaped leaves patterned in silvery-green and dusty rose, this semi-succulent trailing epiphyte is an exquisite addition to arboreal vivariums. It drapes naturally over cork bark backgrounds, driftwood branches, and ledges, creating vertical interest and climbing routes for micro-fauna without overwhelming smaller enclosures.
Bioactive & Husbandry Benefits
- Arboreal Micro-Highways: Delicate, trailing vines create 3D webbing and natural hanging pathways that lightweight climbing inhabitants can navigate, explore, and use for perching.
- Natural Droplet Hydration: Waxy, heart-shaped leaf pairs catch and hold fine morning mist droplets, providing accessible hydration stations for invertebrates and micro-lizards that do not recognize standing water dishes.
- Drought Resilience & Moisture Balance: As a semi-succulent, it stores moisture efficiently within its tuberous root nodules and leaves, allowing it to easily handle enclosure dry-down cycles between mistings.
- Visual Canopy Diffusion: Dense draping strands break up open vertical space and soften harsh enclosure lighting, offering light-filtering shade and visual security for shy arboreal species.
- 100% Non-Toxic & Animal-Safe: Completely pet-safe and free from caustic saps, thorns, or toxic compounds, making it suitable for delicate amphibians, micro-geckos, and invertebrates alike.
Habitat Specifications
- Light Requirements: Moderate to bright indirect vivarium LED lighting. (Higher light levels enhance silvery patterning and purple stems; keep away from high-heat basking spots).
- Humidity Range: 50% – 75% (prefers moderate humidity with proper air circulation; avoid stagnant, perpetually waterlogged air).
- Substrate & Moisture: Requires an airy, free-draining substrate mix (such as ABG mix amended with extra pumice or perlite) or mounting pockets filled with sphagnum moss. Allow the top layer to dry out between mistings to prevent tuber rot.
- Enclosure Placement: Background ledges, upper cork hollows, or mounted high to trail downward through the enclosure canopy.
- Ideal Inhabitants: Jumping spiders, praying mantises, micro-geckos (Sphaerodactylus, Gonatodes), mourning geckos, arboreal tarantulas, dart frogs, and temperate/sub-tropical clean-up crews.
- Structural Durability: Delicate; best suited for lightweight climbers and micro-inhabitants (heavy-bodied geckos or snakes will tear and snap the trailing vines).
Bioactive Prep Tip: Gently remove all commercial nursery soil, rinse the foliage and delicate root nodules thoroughly in clean, dechlorinated water, and bare-root your plant prior to planting to safeguard your bioactive setup from synthetic greenhouse residues.
